Honda Reports Eighth Death From Exploding Takata Air Bags

DETROIT (AP) — Honda is confirming that another person has been killed by an exploding Takata air bag.

The company says 26-year-old Jewel Brangman died in a September 2014 crash in Los Angeles County, California.

Hers is the eighth known death due to air bags that can explode with too much force, sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

Honda says she was driving a 2001 Civic that was rented in San Diego. The company says the car was recalled in July 2009 but not repaired even though its owners were sent four notices.

In May, Takata bowed to U.S. government pressure and agreed to double the number of air bag inflators being recalled to 33.8 million. That made it the largest auto recall in U.S. history.
