State Police: Trooper Killed Man Threatening Him With Pipe

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - State police say a trooper fatally shot a 43-year-old man who threatened him with a metal pipe after a crash in the northern Lower Peninsula.

First Lt. Lawrence Schloegl says the death grew out of an accident call in which an erratic driver hit a house about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports that Schloegl identified the dead man Thursday as Eugene Kailing of Hershey.

The crash happened at an intersection in Osceola County's Highland Township. The site is about 15 miles south-southeast of Cadillac.
