Skins And Pins Event Brings Almost 200 To The Links To Benefit NAMI

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Almost 200 people converged upon two courses at Fox Hills in Plymouth -- taking in a day of golf Sunday in support of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Ten years ago the first Skins and Pins Event to benefit the NAMI Metro was envisioned and the event has grown to raise over $18,000 to support the mental health organization says event coordinator Tony Mitchell.

NAMI provides support, advocacy and education to many families struggling with the fact that a mental illness is affecting one of their own.

We had a hole-in-one and one person came very close to winning a million dollars says Mitchell.

"So many great companies and group's donating and sponsoring to support the cause like SKF, The Stay and Play Social Club, UAW Local 600, Common Ground and Brown-Forman better known as the maker of Jack Daniels," Mitchell adds.

One of every four adults suffer from a mental illness says Mitchell, "most all are good productive people like Robin Williams, Patty Duke, Terry Bradshaw, President Abraham Lincoln and many others that you may not have guessed were affected by this illness."

Special Guest Host, 97.1 The Ticket's Dan Leach said it was an honor to be a part of the event.

"It's a true honor for me to be involved in such an important event that benefits a truly vital and important issue," said Leach. "I don't think we talk about mental illness enough in our day to day lives and there are so many that are affected by this and it's event's like these which shine a light on a problem which affects so many and can help change the world for the better."

Mark your calendars for next year, July 24, 2016 for one of the best golf outings in Metro Detroit, says Leach and check the website at www.skinsandpins.org for more information or ways you can participate.
