'Person With Information' On Hit-And-Run Death Of Nurse On Bicycle To Turn Self In To Authorities
MONTAGUE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A lawyer says a person with information about a hit-and-run crash that killed a 50-year-old Detroit-area woman participating in a group bicycle ride across Michigan's Lower Peninsula is planning to meet with prosecutors.
Royal Oak Attorney Brian Dailey said the meeting is planned for noon Tuesday. He told WXYZ-TV that his client "is beset with remorse and sorrow and sadness and wants to bring closure." However, Dailey hasn't specified his client's link to the crash, which happened around 6:45 a.m. Saturday on Fruitvale Road in Montague Township.
Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said Susan Cummings, of Lake Orion, was killed in "an instant." Cummings, who worked as a Registered Nurse at Henry Ford Hospital was with a large group of bicyclists riding from the Montague area to Bay City to raise money for the Hope Water Project, a charity that builds wells in Kenya.
Witnesses told police a gray or silver pick-up truck hit Cummings but the accident happened so fast, no one was able to catch the truck's license plate. Roseler said there's no doubt the truck's driver knew someone or something had been hit.
"It is a shame that these car-bicycle accidents happen on small county roads with no bicycle lanes and the lack of adequate safety provisions for Susan Cumming's bicycle riding group," Dailey said in a statement. "All involved are truly sorry are for this tragic accident and the death of Susan Cummings. Their prayers and hearts and ours go out to her family, friends and members of her congregation."
