Former Camp Counselor At Jewish Community Center Charged With Producing Child Pornography

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 21-year-old man has been charged with producing child pornography by taking photos of boys in a locker room at a day camp in suburban Detroit.

Matthew Kuppe appeared in Detroit federal court Thursday. He's been fired as a counselor at the Jewish Community Center, which operates camps in West Bloomfield and Oak Park.

West Bloomfield deputy police chief Curt Lawson says investigators are talking to boys to determine the number of victims.

"This subject did have access to a lot of children at the camp -- a counselor is not supposed to be alone with the child so we are ... still investigating that -- this subject has been turned over to the federal government and charged federally. We are going to continue our investigation on a state level for possible further charges."

A seven page complaint outlined graphic and disturbing details of Kuppe's alleged contact with prepubescent boys.

"Victims that we know of at this time range less than six (years of age)," said Lawson, "but obviously since the subject has worked at this camp for several years we want to go back and we want to make sure that we are not missing any victims."

Kuppe will remain in jail until a bond hearing Tuesday. There was no immediate comment from his attorney.

"It appears at this time that the Kuppe did not have any prior arrests or contact with the police -- so it appears at this time that the Jewish Community Center did do their due diligence and their background check on this individual," Lawson said.

The investigation began with a tip about photos of young boys on a website. In a court filing, agents say Kuppe admitted that he posted photos.

He faces up to 20 years in federal prison if found guilty on charges including production, possession, distribution and receiving child pornography.
