Police: Man Broke Into Home, Tried To Strangle Woman As She Slept

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Police are expected to release more information about a terrifying home invasion that took place in Dearborn last month.

The victim told police on Aug. 27 that she was sleeping at her home on the 7900 block of Appoline when she suddenly awoke around 3 a.m. to discover a man on top of her.

The woman screamed and the man covered her mouth and attempted to strangle her before fleeing on foot, according to police.

Evidence at the scene led police to identify the suspect as 22-year-old Terrance Eugene Simmons. He was taken into custody the following day while at a relative's home in Detroit.

Simmons was arraigned on charges of home invasion and assault by strangulation, and was given a $50,000 bond. He's due back in court on Friday for a probable cause conference.

"Bold acts of this nature will not be tolerated and we will aggressively pursue the apprehension of those who commit these types of crimes," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. "I commend the hard work of my officers in getting this dangerous criminal off the streets so quickly."
