Details On The Campaign for Black Male Achievement

Black Male Innovator

By Sharlonda Buckman, CEO, Detroit Parent Network

My son is growing up faster than I'd like. I want the best for him. I want him to accomplish anything and everything he can dream of. Isn't that what we all want as parents? Parents are our first cheerleader/advocate/champion/mentors. We know our children better than anyone else -- and we fight for them.

That's why I'm proud to be fighting for many boys of color, not just my son. I am a supporter of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. Recently, I was selected to be a Black Male Achievement innovator, an honor I share with other great men and women.

My father was the first man who ever loved me. He told me I was smart, and pretty, and played with me. He gave me the confidence and many tools and references I use in my life today. He was absolutely a father figure to many of the young men where I grew up.

To me, being named an Innovator means that I can be a role model for other people who want to improve the life outcomes of Black men and boys. I can also honor my fathers investment in me. Together we can all play a role in ensuring our children live in communities where all young people, regardless of the color of their skin, can walk or skip or jump down the street and not be at risk.
