Nike Moves One Step Closer To Bringing Store To Downtown Detroit

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- After rumors surfaced over the summer that retail giant Nike was planning to bring a flagship store to downtown Detroit, one report indicates that may be inching closer to becoming a possibility.

The Oregon-based sneaker and athletic wear company has submitted plans to the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design -- or LEED -- certification for a property on Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit, according to Crain's Detroit Business.

The 19,500 square foot property is owned by Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Real Estate.

The location could be what Nike calls a "community store" which focuses more on interacting in the community and "supporting volunteerism and allocating volunteer hours to sport- and non sport-related efforts."

In early August, Patrick McInnis, CEO of Fathead, accidentally leaked that a Nike store will be indeed arriving in Detroit sometime in the future.

A spokeswoman for Bedrock refused to comment on the rumors.
