3 Hospitalized In Detroit For Suspected Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

DETROIT (WWJ) - Three people are hospitalized after authorities say they were overcome by fumes inside a home on Detroit's east side.

According to Detroit Fire Department officials, EMS was called to the home on Meldrum near Mt. Elliot and Gratiot around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on a case of possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

No details were immediately released about the victims, who were being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital later in the morning. A Detroit Fire captain said he didn't have any information about their conditions.

The source of the fumes was not immediately clear. An investigation is ongoing.

Carbon monoxide — which is produced by combustion — is odorless, colorless and tasteless and kills more than 500 Americans annually, according to state health officials. In Michigan, up to 50 people die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning.

To help avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, health officials say you should never use generators, barbecue grills, camping stoves or other gasoline or charcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, or garage or near an open window..

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning and feel ill, ventilate the area and call 911. [More information].
