Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle In Sterling Heights
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Police have shut down a busy road in Sterling Heights after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
The accident happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday on 17 Mile Road near Byers, in an area without crosswalks between Mound and Ryan roads.
Lt. Dave Smith said a man was attempting to walk across the road when he was struck by a white Dodge Challenger. As the man fell to the ground, he struck his head on the pavement, according to police. The man was taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital, although his current condition is unknown.
The driver involved stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Smith said.
Donna Papowski, who lives in the area, said drivers often treat the speed limit more like a suggestion.
"People are stupid. They race down 17 Mile all the time, down Mound, everywhere," she said. "Nobody ever goes the speed limit. It's only 45."
Nearby resident Dave Page agreed, saying driving down 17 Mile is not for the faint of heart.
"Usually in the mornings I'm trying to turn down University, and you turn on your turn signal and start to brake right when you cross 17 Mile and people will still be trying to fly up your butt," he said. "They just don't want to slow down for you at all -- especially at rush hour."
An investigation is ongoing.
Seventeen Mile Road was closed for about two-and-a-half hours while police investigated the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
