Plans Move Ahead To Revamp Shuttered Detroit Health Complex

DETROIT (AP) - A New York developer's plans are moving forward to redevelop a massive health complex in a Detroit neighborhood.

The Detroit News reports City Council on Tuesday is expected to green-light a land deal paving the way for a plan to redevelop the shuttered Herman Kiefer complex, which closed in 2013, and the surrounding neighborhood.

Ron Castellano wants to spend at least $75 million on the project. The agreement includes 10 buildings, including former schools and the hospital itself.

Specifics haven't been determined, but Castellano says that there's potential for a mix of housing, retail and office space. He says "a lot of people there are holding on to the neighborhood" and they see a vision and potential. He says he wants to boost those efforts.
