Varisty Football Player Is Also School's Homecoming Queen

COLOMA, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A senior at a southwestern Michigan high school was elected homecoming queen while a member of its varsity football team, The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reported Sunday.

Sabrina Ball is a reserve receiver and defensive back at Coloma High School. She was elected homecoming queen for Friday's game and also performed a trumpet solo as a member of the marching band during pre-game ceremonies.

"I was really excited to be elected Homecoming Queen," Sabrina told CBS Detroit. "My friends and I always talked about 'what if I was' throughout high school and it finally did (happen) and we were all so happy. And so were my teammates."

Did she get some friendly teasing from fellow football players?

"None of them teased me about it, they were all actually proud. I've been playing with the majority of them all my life, and I think they were excited to see me win," she said.

She took homecoming photos Friday in her uniform, but didn't get to play in the team's 21-13 loss to Delton Kellogg.

Sabrina started playing football at age 7 and participated in youth football programs in the community southwest of Grand Rapids. She also was a starter on the offensive and defensive lines on the school's junior varsity team.

"I really do like to do girly stuff, but I like to play football, and I'm not afraid of stuff, either," Sabrina said.
