First Snow Of The Season Falls In Michigan; Freeze Watch For Metro Detroit

BESSEMER, Mich. (WWJ) - Ready or not -- winter is on our doorstep.

The first snow of the season fell Friday morning in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Lori Kristine Schenk, who lives in Bessemer just outside of Ironwood, submitted a picture to The Weather Channel that showed a fresh dusting of snow on her porch.

The picture was taken around 3 a.m. eastern time when temperatures were right around 33 degrees in the UP. But factor in the wind chill and forecasters say it felt more like 25 degrees.

Luckily, there's no snow in the forecast for metro Detroit -- but that doesn't mean it won't be cold. CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said a Freeze Watch will be in effect Friday night through 9 a.m. Saturday. Temperatures are expected to fall at or below 32 degrees.

The sub-freezing temperatures could damage or kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Counties included in the watch are Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Friday -- Partly cloudy skies this morning will give way to occasional showers during the afternoon. Scattered frost possible overnight. High near 55F. Low around 34F.

Saturday -- A mix of clouds and sun in the morning followed by cloudy skies during the afternoon. Scattered frost possible overnight. High 49F. Low 33F.

Sunday -- Generally sunny despite a few afternoon clouds. High around 50F. Low 36F.

Monday -- Sunny skies. High 62F. Low 52F.

Tuesday -- Sunshine and clouds mixed. High 67F. Low 53F.
