Michigan Teacher Finishes First In Free Press Marathon

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan teacher has finished first in the 38th annual Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon in Detroit.

Zachary Ornelas of Ann Arbor covered the course Sunday in 2 hours, 20 minutes, 22.5 seconds. Lyubov Denisova, a native of Moscow, won the women's race with a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes, 39 seconds.

It's Denisova's third Detroit marathon victory.

In the disability division, Tom Davis of Fremont, Indiana, won the hand-cyclist race in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 38 seconds.

Jen Burke, a sales rep at CBS Radio,  finished the half marathon in two hours and 12 minutes.

"The route was awesome," she said.  "I started right near Cobo, I think we had two blocks to go from there and we went across the Ambassador Bridge - all through Windsor - went through the tunnel and pretty much finished downtown Detroit."

"I would do it again, it was a great experience and it was awesome to have all the people cheer you on. The route was eye-opening.

More than 27,000 people signed up for the marathon or half marathon. Runners could choose a half marathon route that included the Ambassador Bridge to Canada and a return to the U.S. through the Detroit River tunnel.
