Lanes Reopen On I-75 In Southwest Detroit After Crew Repairs Massive Pothole

DETROIT (WWJ) - Another giant pothole has been tearing up tires along I-75 in Southwest Detroit.

Traffic backups were reported as a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) road crew worked Monday on the problem along northbound I-75 near Schaefer and the Rouge River bridge.

MDOT's Diane Cross said the hole is in the center lane. That lane, as well as the far right lane, was blocked for repairs.

"In situations like this we do use quick-drying concrete, which is much more expensive, but it dries quicker, cures quicker," Cross said. "So we can get the road open for traffic for the afternoon drive."

All lanes reopened at around 3 p.m.

It's a pothole problem area. That section of I-75 is slated for major resurfacing and deck work in 2017.

"That's one of the three bridges that we'll be redoing; also the Goddard bridge," Cross said. "And also, as you go north on 75, when you're near Schaefer, people don't realize there's a small bridge there that actually also goes over the Rouge...and that will be replaced as well."
