Fan Starts 'Go Fund Me' Account In Hopes Of Raising $1 Billion To Buy Detroit Lions
DETROIT (WWJ) - With his frustration level nearing an all-time high, a longtime Detroit Lions fan has started a "GoFundMe" account with the hope, he says, of eventually raising $1.4 billion to buy the team.
While the Detroit Lions have not put up a 'for sale' sign, Jeff Tarnowski, a transplanted Detroit Lions fan, says he has designs on buying the nearly winless team.
The 34-year-old native of Hartland says that's why he started a GoFundMe account to acquire enough capital to purchase the Lions from the Ford family.
"I'm going to raise $1 billion and buy the Lions - that's the main goal here, but if we fall short a little bit, we will be donating it to some Detroit-area charities," said Tarnowski.
"I'm not going to rant," he says on his GoFundMe page, "we all know the situation. Somebody needs to do something about this monstrosity. I am willing to make that sacrifice for all of you before this Honolulu Blue blood is no longer inherited by our offspring.
"We just want to put a positive spin on it instead of ... just all the negativity out there, right? So, we wanted to do something funny and positive at the same time and then I put in there if we can't get the Ford's to sell we'll find a local charity to donate to," says Tarnowski.
The average NFL team is worth $1.97 billion, according to Forbes, the Lions fall below that average. As of Wednesday, Tarnowski had raised over $1,200.
