Herr's Sour Cream & Onion Potato Chips Recalled

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Despite what the label says, these chips are not gluten-free.

Herr Foods Inc. is recalling certain 1.875 oz bags of Sour Cream & Onion Potato Chips due to a packaging error.

While the back panel of the package lists "wheat" in the ingredient statement as well as "contains wheat" in its related allergen statement, the front panel of the package erroneously features the words "Gluten Free."

Most people can eat gluten — a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and crossbreeds of these grains — but in people with celiac disease, gluten intake can cause diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, abdominal pain, brain fog, rashes, nausea, vomiting, and other reactions.

Herr's has not yet received any reported illnesses by those who ate the chips.

The  individual 1.875 oz. bags — which are the only chips included in the recall — were sold at various stores nationwide and online.

The bags are a metallic green color with a red Herr's logo at the top. To see if the bag you have is included in the recall, check for code date January 02, 2016 through January 30, 2016, UPC No. 72600 00061, and Herr's product code 122. The lot number is found at the upper right hand corner on the front of the package below the statement "Guaranteed Fresh Until". The UPC number is located at the lower right hand corner of the back panel of the package.

Those who have celiac disease, wheat allergies or a sensitivity to gluten should not eat the chips and may return them to the store of purchase for a refund.  Retailers have been asked to remove the affected chips from shelves.

Consumers with questions can call 1-800-523-5030 during regular business hours.
