Jury Selected In Flint Official's Impaired Driving Case

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - A jury has been selected for a Flint city councilman's second trial in an impaired driving case after disputes and a rejected call by a prosecutor for a mistrial.

The Flint Journal reports the jury was seated Tuesday in East Lansing District Court in for Eric Mays' trial. He's representing himself in the case that moved after Flint judges recused themselves.

Mays asked potential jurors if they believed in God. Special prosecutor Michael Gildner objected.

Gildner called for a mistrial, arguing his objection could make him appear anti-God to jurors. Judge Richard Ball declined but said he would speak with jurors about what he deemed an improper topic in the courtroom.

Mays was arrested in 2013. The first jury convicted him on an impaired driving charge. A judge overturned it and ordered a new trial after Mays appealed.
