Plans Move Ahead For Upscale Downtown Detroit Apartments

DETROIT (AP) - Plans are moving forward on a $24 million project to build upscale housing atop a downtown Detroit parking garage.

Construction is expected to begin this month on The Griswold, a five-story apartment complex that will be above the 10-story parking garage. Eighty market-rate apartments are planned for the project, which is adjacent to the Westin Book Cadillac hotel.

The Detroit News reports The Griswold is billed as the first new construction of downtown housing in nearly 25 years. It's developed by The Roxbury Group.

Planning for the project started in 2006 when the garage was built for the renovated Book Cadillac. The recession delayed the apartment project.
