Logging Planned For Mio Pond Campground, Fishing Site

MIO, Mich. (AP) - Portions of the Mio Pond State Forest Campground and fishing site in Oscoda County will be cut down over the next several months.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the logging operations are expected to begin early next week.

The DNR says all aspen trees within the areas will be removed because they've reached an age where they are a hazard to visitors, often snapping off during storms.

Also targeted for harvesting are oak trees bigger than 4 inches in diameter. Deadly oak wilt has been infecting several trees in the area each year.

Most spruce and white pines and all smaller hardwoods will remain.
