Hold On To Your Hat! Extreme Winds, Snow Possible In Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Remember that nice, sunny, 70 degree weather we unexpectedly basked in last week? Well that is long -- LONG -- gone. Metro Detroit is now possibly in store for its first wallop of winter.

Forecasters say southeastern Michigan will see high winds and rain mixed with snow as part of a strong storm system moving into the Midwest. The winds are going to hit Thursday with gusts of up to 60 mph anticipated, and slushy snow could start falling by Friday.

A High Wind Watch will be in effect Thursday for the entire region. The National Weather Service says the strongest winds will be between 2 and 8 p.m. Thursday.

Elsewhere across the state, waves on Lake Michigan are expected to be 6 to 10 feet on Wednesday night and peak Thursday in the 12- to 15-foot range. Lake Huron could also see dangerous conditions.

The Weather Service has also issued gale warnings for the Great Lakes region that are in effect until Thursday morning.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Wednesday -- Areas of dense morning fog. Sunny skies will become windy with showers and a possible thunderstorm or two developing after midnight. High 57F. Low 46F.

Thursday -- Extremely windy. Rain showers in the morning becoming less numerous in the afternoon. High 52F. Low 41F

Friday -- A morning shower in spots, possible rain-snow mix; otherwise, mainly cloudy and windy.  High near 45F. Low 36F.

Saturday -- Mostly sunny. High around 50F. Low 39F.

Sunday --  Sunny skies. High 59F. Low around 40F.
