FAA: Plane Hit By Laser While Flying Near Detroit Metro Airport

ROMULUS (AP) - The Federal Aviation Administration says plane heading to Detroit Metropolitan Airport was illuminated by a laser while flying about 3,000 feet off the ground.

Agency spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says in an email that the plane was about 8 miles east of the airport in Romulus on Wednesday when it was struck. No injuries were reported.

The FAA says the plane was among more than 20 aircraft reported struck by lasers from the ground on Wednesday over a number of U.S. cities.

The FAA says there have been 36 reports of lasers being pointed at aircraft in the Detroit area from the start of the year through mid-October, up from 33 in all of 2014. An FBI campaign last year targeted the illegal use of laser pointers to distract airplanes.
