Police: Drunk Mom Caused Crash Leaving 9-Year-Old Son On Life Support

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a mother was drunk at the wheel when she crashed her car on the city's west side, critically injuring her 9-year-old son who is now on life support.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. Thursday at Greenfield and Margareta, just south of 7 Mile Road.

According to police, the mother was driving a Chevy Malibu southbound on Greenfield Road when she rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee. The collision forced the Jeep into the intersection where it struck a northbound-traveling Lincoln MKT.

The mother, whose identity was not released, was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital in serious condition. Her 9-year-old son was taken to Sinai Grace Hospital in extremely critical condition before being transferred to Children's Hospital, where he was placed on life support.

The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with a leg injury. The driver of the Lincoln, a 73-year-old man, was also taken to the hospital with back and neck injuries. Both were listed in stable condition.

Police say the mother was intoxicated and will now be facing several charges, including operating under the influence, child neglect and endangerment.
