Frightened Kitten Rescued From I-94 In Detroit [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - An injured kitten will lose his leg but is otherwise expected to be OK after he was found hobbling along a local freeway.

A passing motorist at first thought the little guy was a piece of paper — on the side of eastbound I-94 near Van Dyke in Detroit —  but when she got a closer look she realized it was a tiny cat.

"I knew that if I didn't do something to help, I'd be thinking about it for weeks, so I called MHS," Raquel Garcia Andersen said.

Two Michigan Humane Society rescue drivers quickly arrived on the scene and, with the help of the caller, were able to locate the frightened kitten.

"He was curled up in a ball in the median and so I grabbed my cat grabber to safely secure him," said Amanda Boots, MHS rescue driver. "He ended up going underneath the car behind me, but I was able to secure him and get him safely in the rescue van."

MHS spokesman Ryan McTigue said the kitten is remains in their care.

He's expected to make a full recovery — with a caveat.

"He's doing fine, relatively speaking," McTigue told WWJ Newsradio 950. "He does have a severely fractured leg that will need to be amputated. So, he's going to have some recovery time on that, but these little guys are resilient, and they typically bounce back pretty well."

"He'll be able to get around just fine on three legs and live a long, normal, happy life as a three-legged kitten."

McTigue said it's unclear how the kitten ended up on the freeway.  Foul play is not suspected.
