Charge Dismissed Against Michigan Tech Student Who Threatened African-Americans Online

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A charge of disturbing the peace against a Michigan Technological University student who authorities say threatened blacks on social media has been dismissed.

The misdemeanor charge against 21-year-old Matthew Shultz was dismissed without prejudice, meaning it can be brought again if new evidence is revealed.

Shultz was arrested last month in the case. He was accused of making the threatening comments on a social media site called Yik Yak, an anonymous message board where users can post comments to a specific community. Police say the threats were directed at members of Michigan Tech's black community.

The university increased its police presence after the threats as a precautionary measure.

Prosecutor Michael Makinen told The Daily Mining Gazette that the investigation remains "ongoing."
