Girl, 7, Dead, 8-Year-Old Seriously Hurt In Detroit Shooting; 2 In Custody

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 7-year-old girl has been killed and her 8-year-old half-sister seriously hurt after someone fired a gun into their Detroit home as they played with Christmas presents.

The deadly incident happened in the area of 7 Mile and Outer Drive -- on the 16000 block of Steel Street in Detroit Sunday night.

Victim Chanel Berry dance (Family photo)Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt telling WWJ that 23-year-old Sharon Benson has turned herself in and police have made another arrest in connection with the shooting.

Police said someone shot into the home multiple times Sunday night on the city's northwest side following a family argument. The 7-year-old died after being shot on the home's main floor, and older girl is being treated at a hospital.

Dolunt says the 8-year-old "is going to be OK."

WWJ's Charlie Langton spoke Monday with the mother of Chanel Berry, killed in the shooting:

"I've got three other kids, three boys. That was my only daughter, that was my only daughter," she said.

Dolunt says the 8-year-old "is going to be OK."

Dolunt says there had been a holiday party at the home, a fight broke out and someone left and returned with a gun.

"The kids didn't do anything wrong, the kids did nothing wrong - it seems more like some people were upset - they don't have common sense - just argue - they have to pull out a gun and unfortunately they did and now two kids are shot," said Dolunt.
