Action Impact Gun Range Offers FREE Range Time On New Year's Eve

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A metro Detroit firearms center is offering free range time all day on New Year's Eve in an attempt to discourage random gunfire as the new year rolls in.

Action Impact said 30-minutes of free range time per person will be offered at its facilities in Southfield and Eastpointe from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Shimeka Williams-Sanders, an office manager at Action Impact, said this is the third year the range is hosting the free event.

"We open up our range for everyone to come and shoot in hopes that they wouldn't go out at midnight and shoot up in the air," Williams-Sanders told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "When you shoot up in the air, the ammunition has to come down and we really want everyone to be safe this New Year's Eve."

And the turnout is usually great, Williams-Sanders said, with lines out the door of people from all walks of life.

"Everyone comes out and enjoys themselves for their 30 minutes," she said. "From hunters and first time people who just want to shoot, who have never shot before, and then we have the 65-and-over population that actually is always in our store, so we have everybody that comes in and shoots."

Even if you don't have a weapon, you're still invited to take advantage of the free range time.

"You can rent a firearm, that's $12," said Williams-Sanders.

A half-hour of range time usually costs $11.
