17 On Lions Roster Will Become Unrestricted Free Agents In Off-Season

DETROIT (WWJ) - While the fate of Jim Caldwell is the main story on the minds of many - it's not the only story developing on and off the field. There are also a number of Lions players that are scheduled to become free agents in the off- season says WWJ's Tony Ortiz.

There are 17 on the current roster who will be come unrestricted free agents - those are the free agents eligible to sign anywhere, after the Super Bowl -- 24 players become free agents in total.

Among those free agents is linebacker Tahir Whitehead, who says he's not going to worry about the road ahead -- at least not right now.

"Going to my house and just kicking back and enjoying time with my family," said Tahir Whitehead. "Letting everything else play out as far as contract negoation and everything like that."

Another crucial decision will be the fate of Calvin Johnson, who will count $24 million against the Lions' salary cap next season.

Immediately following the win over the Bears on Sunday he spoke to Ortiz.

"I love Detroit, you know. That's it. I love Detroit," said Calvin Johnson.

The Lions finished the regular season 7-9 -- third place in the NFC North -- behind the Packers and the 11-5 Vikings.
