58,000 Properties In Wayne County Headed Toward Foreclosure In March

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Hundreds of property owners in Detroit and some of its suburbs who are facing tax foreclosure are taking steps they hope will allow them to stay in their homes.

Wayne County Chief Deputy Treasurer Eric Sabree told The Detroit News that about 58,000 properties countywide are headed toward foreclosure in March unless owners enter into agreements with the county. An estimated 50,000 are in Detroit.

"We are making an extra effort this year to reach out to those (who owe) low amounts, only a couple thousand," Sabree told the newspaper.

On Tuesday, nearly 1,000 property owners facing tax foreclosure packed an auditorium in downtown Detroit for an event aimed at getting them on payment plans.

So far, more than 18,500 property owners are in payment plans with the county.

Hearings are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the treasurer's office downtown. More hearings are scheduled later this month.

Plans also call for door-to-door outreach in the coming weeks with volunteers from nonprofits.
