Detroit Woman Fleeing Police Killed During Attempted Traffic Stop In Dearborn

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A 31-year old woman is dead, after a shooting involving Dearborn police. The incident took place on Hubbard Drive, near the Southfield Service Drive, as police were attempting to make a traffic stop.

Police say that the woman almost drove into an officer with her car.

The woman's vehicle was riddled with bullet holes.

"Today Dearborn Police Department was dispatched to Fairland Town Center for a disturbance which occurred at about 4:10 p.m., the officers responded to the scene and observed a vehicle fleeing from the parking lot after reportedly attempting to run over a security officer," said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. "and almost striking a security vehicle. The officers attempted a traffic stop on Hubbard, at which time the suspect refused to stop and eventually became stuck in traffic. As officers approached the vehicle to arrest the driver - the driver again attempted to flee after clearing traffic and almost struck a police officer. One officer on scene fired their duty weapon striking the driver. The driver has been identified as a 31-year-old female from Detroit and was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. One of the officers on scene received non-life threatening during the incident - he was transported to a local hospital where he currently remains."

This man saw the whole thing unfold:

"Not even pulling out onto Hubbard Drive, I just see -- I hear gun shots, like four to five gunshots and I see a police car just flying right in front of me," said the witness. "I looked down the street on Hubbard and I just see the cop car and the third cop car that was here - just bust a U-turn and blocked the car."

"They blocked this off and then the only thing I heard was gunshots," he added.

At least one officer was also being treated for minor injuries.

Initial reports indicate that this started with some kind of incident at the Fairlane Mall.

Dearborn Police have asked the Michigan State Police to conduct an independent investigation of the fatal shooting.

This is the second fatal shooting in just over a month, involving a Dearborn Police officer. Back in December, 35-year-old Kevin Matthews, a mentally-ill man, was shot and killed after a foot chase. That case also remains under investigation.
