Northville Man 2nd To Die After I-94 Pileups Involving 60 Vehicles

HARTFORD, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A Northville man has died from injuries he suffered in a series of accidents along I-94 in west Michigan, earlier this month.

State police First Lt. Dale Hinz told the Kalamazoo Gazette Wednesday that 54-year-old died Andrew Griesemer died Sunday in Kalamazoo. His mother, 78-year-old Carol Griesemer of Northville, who was a passenger died at the time of the accident.

The freeway was closed for about six hours following the crashes on Jan. 17,  near the Van Buren County community of Hartford.

Police said nine vehicles were involved in a crash in the eastbound lanes before two semi-trucks collided, causing a pileup of more than 40 cars and trucks. Another crash involved 12 vehicles in the westbound lanes.

More than a dozen people were injured, including a Van Buren County deputy who was struck by a vehicle while outside his patrol car rendering first aid.

Police said weather was a factor. Drivers were going too fast and following too closely in white-out conditions.
