NOVI (WWJ) – A house fire in Novi claims the lives of five people Sunday morning.

Director of Novi Public Safety David Molloy says responders received a call about the fire on Mystic Forest Drive near Novi Road around 9:30 a.m.

“Our firefighters responded and immediately made entry into the home where -ultimately, once the fire was extinguished they were able to find what appears to be five victims.”

The Associated Press reports that authorities attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation Sunday on two of the victims, but were unsuccessful in reviving them.

Molloy says preliminary reports show that the fire may have started in the basement but couldn’t confirm the exact cause of the fire at this time.

Molloy says the victims’ ages ranged from late 20’s to early 30’s and were all found in the basement of the home.

The identities of the victims are not known and at this time authorities can’t say if they were residents at the home.

Police say they are very early in their investigation and state they will leave no stone unturned.
