Attorney And Family Of Woman Killed During Police Incident Near Dearborn Mall Speak Out

DETROIT (WWJ) - The family of a Detroit woman, shot and killed one week ago today by Dearborn police, is speaking out about her death Wednesday afternoon.

Thirty-one-year-old Janet Wilson was shot multiple times while sitting in her car along Hubbard Drive after what police described as an incident with security at nearby Fairlane Mall.

"I don't want you to turn a blind eye to this," said her niece Cassie Bass. "This can not happen, this can not keep going on. Injustice for one, injustice for all. Who is policing the police. They gunned my auntie down. She didn't have a weapon."

Police say that Wilson attempted to drive away nearly hitting an officer who had gotten out of his car to confront her before shots were fired.

"The people who's supposed to protect and serve -- gun you down? Who do you turn to at that point?" said Bass.

The case remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police.

"If there were shots fired into this vehicle, before it started to advance," said the family's attorney Vince Colella, "than that would be excessive force."

The shooting is the second involving a Dearborn police officer and an unarmed person in just over a month.
