HARSENS ISLAND (WWJ) – Authorities have identified a Canadian man who was found dead, floating near Harsens Island on Wednesday.

According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, the body is that of 68-year-old Richard Wainwright of London, Ontario.

Detectives were called to the scene Wednesday morning after Harsens Island homeowners spotted the body,  floating in a cut off the North Channel near their house.

While local authorities were checking the missing persons database, they got a call from London police who said it might be a London man who was reported missing from his home Tuesday morning.

Photos of the remains were sent to London and Wainwright was positively identified.

It was not immediately clear how he died. Donnellon said an autopsy on Wainwright was scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the St. Clair County morgue.

An investigation by London and Ontario Provincial Police is ongoing.
