Department Of Community Health: Zika Virus In Michigan Would Not Be Surprising

DETROIT (WWJ) - There are reports that a Grosse Pointe Farms woman may be Michigan's first case of the Zika virus.

WXYZ TV reports that the woman has flu-like symptoms and pink eye.

Angela Minicucci at the Michigan Department of Community Health says it wouldn't be surprising if the Zika virus showed up in Michigan from someone who recently traveled to Florida, as this woman did.

"We are seeing more and more cases in the United States," said Minicucci. "So given the fact that there is a large mosquito population in Michigan as well as the fact that there are people who just travel between states and countries, there is a chance that Michigan will see cases."

She says Zika virus symptoms can include:

"If you travel to an area that is known to have active Zika cases - we basically would see people who have a fever, rash, joint pain, red eye is common with this and then there are a couple other symptoms like muscle pain, headache," said Minicucci.

A study from the New England Journal of Medicine

Zika can be passed on through sex and blood transfusions. There is no vaccine for the virus that can cause miscarriages and birth defects in babies.
