Mount Pleasant Plans To Restrict Tobacco Use In Parks

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) - Officials in Mount Pleasant are moving forward with plans to restrict tobacco use in parks and other public places in the city.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports that the city's Parks and Recreation Commission voted to plan and implement the policy this year.

The policy would seek to engage community members in enforcement. Plans call for signs to designate areas where smoking is discouraged.

City Manager Nancy Ridley says there would be "voluntary compliance" with the policy, but officials can move to "stronger enforcement" if needed.

Cigars, e-cigarettes, pipes and smokeless tobacco products also would be among tobacco products that are discouraged. Similar policies are in place in some other communities.
