Michigan Cop Who Struck, Killed Pedestrian Gets 60 Days In Jail

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) - A police officer in southwestern Michigan has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for killing a pedestrian while rushing to a home at 30 mph above the speed limit.

Berrien County Judge Dennis Wiley says Eugene Anderson failed to turn on his police lights and siren while responding to a domestic call last September. His car struck and killed 48-year-old Kimberly Bedford of Hartford, who was drunk and not using a crosswalk.

Anderson was subsequently fired as a Benton Township officer. He was convicted of causing death while driving, a misdemeanor. Before getting his sentence Friday, Anderson said his life's been "ruined."

The judge told him: "You are not above the law."

Anderson's supporters are disappointed. A local pastor, the Rev. Robert DeFrance, calls it a "miscarriage of justice."
