Grosse Ile High School Students Sent Home, Activities Canceled, Due To Online Threat

GROSS ILE (WWJ) - Grosse Ile High School released students from class early on Wednesday due to an online threat.

In a message posted to the Grosse Ile Township Schools Facebook page, district Superintendent Joanne Lelekatch said the threat, which was "intercepted" by police Wednesday morning, is under investigation.

"Working collaboratively with the police, and focusing on our number one priority; safety, the decision was made to dismiss students from the building," Lelekatch said. "The police have taken over the emergency/investigation and they are present at the high school and will remain until they are confident things are clear."

Lelekatch said all district buildings went into "secure mode with business as usual," stressing, however, that no other building was under threat.

All Grosse Ile High School activities were canceled for the day, and Wednesday night's Winterfest would be rescheduled, Lelekatch said. For the girl's basketball away game, athletes were instructed to board the bus at the high school as usual.

Lelekatch said students and parents should assume school would be in session as normal on Thursday, unless they are otherwise notified.

One parent praised efforts by school officials and police.

"Heartfelt thanks to our incredible Grosse Ile teachers, school staff, law enforcement officials and all the others who assisted with keeping our kids safe during the high school evacuation," wrote Terri Kelley Butler. "My kids described outstanding organization and caring displayed to the kids to keep them feeling secure and safe. Very proud to call our beautiful island home."

There were no details immediately available about the nature of the threat.

No injuries have been reported.

Anyone with information about the threat is asked to call the Grosse Ile Police Department.
