Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Amtrak Train In Downtown Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Authorities say a man is dead after being struck by a train in downtown Royal Oak.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. Saturday at South Main and Sixth streets.

Royal Oak police say a 26-year-old man tried to cross the CN Railroad tracks, ignoring the lowered crossing arm in the face of an oncoming Amtrak train, when he was struck.

"Several witnesses indicated that the train was sounding its horn and the railroad crossing was active and working properly at the time of the incident," police said in a statement.

The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family, but police say he was visiting the area from Florida.

Police have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.

The crossings near Washington, Main, Fourth and Sixth streets were shut down for several hours after the accident but have since reopened.

Royal Oak police, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and CN Railroad police are all involved in the investigation.

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident is urged to contact police at 248-246-3500.
