Warren Voters To Consider Extending Mayoral Term Limits

WARREN (WWJ/AP) - Residents of the Detroit suburb of Warren will be asked to vote in August to approve extending mayoral term limits to let someone serve up to 20 years in the post.

The proposal would change the limit from a maximum of three, 4-year terms to five, 4-year terms. If approved by voters, the change would cover Mayor Jim Fouts, who was re-elected in November for a third 4-year term.

Some residents of Michigan's third-largest city oppose the proposed change. Scott Holloway told the Detroit News "12 years is enough in any position."

The Warren City Charter would be amended if approved, The Macomb Daily reported. In 1998, residents voted to place term limits on the office of mayor, the City Council, city clerk and city treasurer.
