DETROIT (WWJ) – A section of the I-96 expressway in Detroit was shut down for several hours Thursday morning after a 17-year-old boy was found beaten and unresponsive inside of a stalled vehicle.

The situation unfolded around 2:35 a.m. when 911 dispatchers received a call about an assault in progress on the westbound I-96 express lanes near Schaefer Avenue.

When Michigan State Police troopers arrived on the scene, they found the teenager inside a black car that was up against the median wall. Police say the teen was severely beaten, bleeding heavily and unresponsive. He was rushed to a local hospital where he is currently unresponsive, but stable.

Police say the vehicle also had heavy damage that did not appear to happen on the freeway.

Troopers interviewed the person who placed the 911 call, who witnessed the assault while driving in the local lanes. The witness told police he stopped after passing the scene and then reversed back toward it, at which point the suspects — described as two black males — fled the scene, possibly in a silver car.

Detectives have not been able to interview the victim due to his medical condition.

The suspects remain at large.

Police are looking to speak with anyone who was driving in the area at the time and might have seen something. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 248-584-5740, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The expressway was closed from the Davison Freeway to Southfield Freeway for several hours as police investigated the scene, but has since reopened.
