Wayne County Hosting Maple Sugaring Events In Hines Park

NORTHVILLE (WWJ) -- A really sweet event is is planned for Saturday in metro Detroit.

Wayne County Parks is hosting its annual Maple Sugaring program in March to show curious hikers how maple syrup is made. Naturalist at Cass Benton Park picnic shelter in Northville will demonstrate actual tree-tapping, showing guests how to drill and tap into sugar Maple tree trunks.

Carol Clements, a manager at Nankin Mills, says that March is the best month for the event.

"[It's] the only time of year the sap is flowing fast enough that we could collect it," Clements said. "We live in a really unique part of the country where we get the right climate temperature change in between day and night in the spring to make that sap flow up the tree really fast."

Two sessions are set for 10 a.m. and noon. Another sugaring demonstration is scheduled for the same times on March 19.

Cass Benton Park located on Northville Rd. just north of 6 Mile.

"People are really interested in what's in their food today," Clements said. "Real maple syrup has a lot of minerals in it -- it has iron and calcium. In fact, there's even a new push for people to use maple sap as a health food drink."

Pre-registration is required. To register by phone please call 734-261-1990. The program costs $6 per child and $2 per adult.
