Man Shot During Confrontation With Oakland County Deputies
PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a handgun-wielding man was shot and wounded during a confrontation with deputies behind a home in Pontiac.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said deputies received information Monday evening that "a subject known to
them" was driving around in an SUV while flashing a weapon.
When they pulled him over, the man ran from the vehicle and into a backyard where deputies say they ordered him to drop his gun.
"The suspect turned towards the deputies with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun in his hand, at which time, deputies, in fear for their safety, shot at the suspect until he was no longer an imminent danger," the department stated, in a release.
The man underwent surgery at a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition later Tuesday.
Deputies said the handgun the suspect carried was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. He also had a loaded, 30-round magazine, deputies said, and second handgun was found in the SUV.
Sheriff's officials said the man has prior felony convictions for numerous crimes, including home invasion, and is legally prohibited from possessing firearms. The man's weapons were also allegedly not registered.
The man's name and age were not immediately released. Charges are pending as an investigation continues.
