Port Huron Man Credits Late Father With Lotto Jackpot

PORT HURON (CBS Detroit) Joseph Durcan, 45, matched the six Lotto 47 numbers drawn on Feb. 27 – 11-25-28-32-34-46 – to win the $1.15 million jackpot.

And he credits his late father for helping him win.

Durcan bought his winning ticket at the Sunrise Store, 2627 Gratiot Boulevard in Marysville.

"My dad's birthday was the 11th, and 11 was in all three lines of my ticket," said Durcan. "I'm sure he had a hand in helping me win the jackpot."

Durcan visited Lottery headquarters in Lansing immediately to collect his prize. He chose to receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $730,000 rather than an annuity.

With his winnings, Durcan plans to pay off his debt, buy a new truck, buy a vehicle for his mother, and invest the remainder.

Lotto 47 drawings take place on Wednesday and Saturday at 7:29 p.m. Tickets may be purchased until 7:08 p.m. on the day of the drawing.

About 97 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to retailers, lottery officials say.

In the 2015 fiscal year, the Lottery's contribution to Michigan's public schools was $795.5 million.
