Football Financial: Making The Right Money Moves From College To Pro Sports

DETROIT (WWJ) - Several local high school football players heading to college will be paired-up with some current and former NFL players at a financial literacy workshop.

With a goal of building a sound financial future, the workshop, says Tim Walton president of the National Football Players Association in Detroit, gives student athletes an opportunity to benefit from some real world experiences of professional athletes.

"So if you are not smart at managing your money -- you could be broke," says Walton, "as quick as you were rich."

That's part of the focus at their Financial Literacy workshop at Ford Field for college-bound high school football players.

"Coupled with all that," says Walton, "we are going to teach them about financial literacy - some of these professional athletes understand what it was to make $50,000 in a week and now have to manage and make $50,000 in a year."

A number of professional athletes will be on hand to share their stories of financial windfall and hardship -- as well as to make students aware of what their life is about and walk them through their own story.
