More Than 11,000 Detroit Youth Apply For Jobs Program

DETROIT (AP) - More than 11,000 young people have applied online for summer jobs through the Grow Detroit's Young Talent program.

The city says the application review process begins Monday and that those selected for the program will be notified by April 29.

The program runs July 6 through Aug. 26. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the mayor's office, City Connect Detroit, Detroit Employment Solutions Corp. and others.

Mayor Mike Duggan has challenged businesses and foundations to put 8,000 city youth ages 14-24 to work this summer.

In its inaugural year in 2015, the initiative connected nearly 5,600 young residents with work experiences and job skills.

Duggan said in a release that young people in Detroit "want to work, they just need an opportunity."
