2nd Man Charged In Attempted Break-In At Arab American News

DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - A second man has been charged in connection with an attempted break-in this month at the Detroit-area offices of The Arab American News.

Dearborn police say 22-year-old Kawayne Powell of Taylor turned himself in Monday and was arraigned on charges that included attempted breaking and entering and possession of burglary tools. The court says he'll get a court-appointed attorney.

Police Chief Ronald Haddad tells The Associated Press that theft appeared to be the motive.

Surveillance video showed two men apparently using a hammer to try to smash a rear glass door around 2:30 a.m. March 11 at the newspaper's office on Chase Road, just north of Ford Road in Dearborn — which has one of the largest Arab-American populations in the U.S.

Employees were inside the building, working to publish the newspaper. No one was injured.

The men damaged the door but left the scene without getting inside.

Twenty-year-old Deandre Bey of Detroit is also charged in the case. He was arraigned last Thursday on charges of attempted breaking and entering, larceny from a vehicle, malicious destruction of property and possession of burglary tools. Bey is due in court Wednesday for a probable cause conference, followed by an April 1 preliminary exam.
