Snyder Signs $28M Bill For Outdoor Recreation Projects

LANSING (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will spend $28 million on outdoor recreation projects across Michigan.

The measure authorizes funding for 70 projects that were recommended earlier by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board.

The board selects projects each year to receive grants from a fund established in 1976 from royalties paid by companies that develop state-owned minerals such as oil and natural gas.

Some grants are used to buy land, while others support improvements to facilities such as parks, trails and boat launches.

More than $1 billion has been distributed from the fund in the past 40 years.

The biggest land acquisition grant this year was nearly $7.6 million to Grand Rapids for a river rapids restoration project.
