'Gown Town' Allows All Girls To Shine On Prom Night

TROY (WWJ) - A line snaked around a good portion of Oakland Mall in Troy Sunday afternoon ahead of prom season. Many high school girls want to attend prom, but not all can afford it.

Gown Town (LBarthold)That's why our sister station, 98.7 AMP Radio puts on "Gown Town" every year, where ladies in financial need can get a free dress.

"I mean I probably would still go," says Hope. "But I would find a discounted dress, for sure, but the idea that people are willing to donate dresses they've already used is actually kind of amazing. You are only going to wear it once anyways."

That's Hope from Waterford -- she's taking her sister to the dance. They were both waiting in line with their mom for about an hour when they still had a ways to go, but as long as girls were in line before 2 o'clock they got a dress no matter what.

Some girls said they love the variety of these gently used dresses because the big box stores all carry the same styles.

Sabrina from Clawson says she found her dream dress: "it's got sparkles on it ... it's the one I'm most excited about."

The Gown Town event has ensures all Detroit teens shine on prom night regardless of their financial situation for five years now.
