The Snack Attack: Burger King's Angriest Whopper Is Good, But Not Very Spicy [TASTE TEST]

Burger King's new Angriest Whopper is being touted as the fast-food chain's spiciest burger yet, but does it live up to all the hype? Sadly, the answer is no.

An amped up version of their famed Angry Whopper, here's how BK describes the new sandwich:

The Angriest Whopper consists of savory flame-grilled beef, piled high with thick-cut bacon, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, crispy onion petals, jalapeños, creamy mayonnaise and spicy angry sauce all layered between a fiery red bun that has hot sauced baked in.

Here's how I describe the burger:

A flame-grilled Whopper with a kick of spicy Carolina BBQ sauce, crispy bacon, soggy onion petals, globs of mayo and not enough jalapeños, sandwiched between a brightly colored red bun that has a hint of sweetness.

Yeah, you probably wouldn't expect the word "sweetness" to be included in the description of the Angriest Whopper but that's just how tame this burger really is.

I have to be honest -- my husband did point out that we eat A LOT of spicy foods often cooked with habanero peppers or ghost chilies, so maybe I have a higher expectation than the norm when it comes to something being advertised as "the angriest burger ever created."

All that said, the sandwich was still really yummy overall and the angry sauce, although it wasn't spicy enough for my liking, was absolutely delicious and made the whole thing worth it. What I wouldn't do to get my hands on a bottle of that sauce!!

Review: Burger King's Angriest Whopper

Appearance: Well, there's no mistaking this is an artificially colored bun. The bright red color is walking a pretty fine line into hot pink territory, but at least it gets the point across. It was probably just the sandwich I got, but there was way too much mayonnaise, like globs of it hanging off the sides of the bun. And there were only three onion petals, which weren't crispy at all. BOO! On the plus side, there was so much angry sauce on the burger that it was dripping off. Can't complain about that.

Aroma: I kind of felt like a weirdo sitting in the middle of this restaurant, my face basically on the table because I was trying to get a big whiff of this burger. I really thought I would be able to smell the hot sauce or at least the jalapeños but really, the only thing I could make out was that flame-grilled burger smell.

Taste: At first I was asking myself where the sweetness was coming from and I pin-pointed it to the bun. I took a few bites of just the bun and while it's not at all spicy like I was expecting, there was a scant flavor of hot sauce. Not the heat, just the flavor.

Burger King says the Angriest Whopper has "jalapeños packed into every infuriating bite." If only that were true!! The bites I took that actually included a jalapeño were few and far between -- but they were the best bites of all and really the only ones I would classify as spicy. Maybe if there were more peppers on this burger it would be more true to its name. But then I guess it would just be a jalapeño burger. How boring.

The thing that was really supposed to set this burger apart from the rest was the "spicy angry sauce." I'm not exactly sure what angry sauce is, but it's not very spicy. I was expecting something like hot-sauce but it tasted more like the mustard-barbeque sauce made famous in South Carolina, with a little bit of a kick. The sauce was disappointing on the spiciness scale, but a big win on the deliciousness level.

Pros: A huge burger sure to fill you up. The bacon was perfectly crispy, what luck, and although the sauce wasn't spicy, it was delicious. The jalapeños were a nice surprise, I just wish there were more. If you don't like really spicy foods, you should try it. All the ingredients work well together for a very enjoyable taste with a little kick.

Cons: If you're looking for heat, on the other hand, you'll be disappointed -- it's not very spicy.  Not enough jalapeños or onion petals.

Rating: 4 out of 10 -- The sandwich itself is yummy but COME ON -- if it's supposed to be the angriest, make sure it's actually spicy!
